Advice is provided on traditional and state of the art microbiology techniques. The aim is to provide tools to verify the correct operation of sterilization elements, thus, both physical and biological sterilization methods are recommended. For the quantification of microorganisms, traditional microbiological techniques are recommended and explained, such as colony count using specific culture media. For the identification of microorganisms, depending on the case, traditional molecular typing techniques such as 16S RNA or MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry are suggested.
